The Hidden Damage of Favoritism in Youth Ministry (And How to Stop It)

Favoritism may be one of the most overlooked threats to healthy youth ministry curriculum and discipleship environments. It rarely shows up in obvious ways—but its impact can quietly undermine trust, belonging, and long-term spiritual formation.

Youth ministry is full of incredible opportunities.

We get to speak truth into students’ lives. We get to encourage them, walk with them, and help them experience the love of Christ in personal ways. But with that privilege comes a sobering responsibility—because the same relationships that can bring healing can also cause deep hurt.

Why Favoritism Is So Damaging in Youth Ministry

One of the most damaging ways that happens is through favoritism.

Favoritism doesn’t always look intentional. Sometimes it’s as simple as spending more time with the students we naturally connect with—the ones who are easy to talk to, share our interests, or make us feel successful as leaders. But from a student’s perspective, favoritism feels like rejection. It communicates, “You matter less.”

And that pain cuts deeply, especially when it comes from someone they trust and want to be known by.

Even worse, I’ve seen youth leaders use favoritism as a way to control students—giving attention to some and withholding it from others. That’s not just unhealthy; it’s spiritually dangerous. I know far too many people who walked away from the church because their youth pastor didn’t like them—or at least made them feel that way.

Favoritism doesn’t just hurt feelings—it shapes how students see the church, leadership, and even God.

The Leadership Responsibility: Proactive Integrity

If we want to lead a healthy youth ministry with integrity, we have to be proactive.

Start by inviting honest feedback. Ask the adults around you if they see any signs of favoritism in your ministry—including in you. That kind of humility is essential.

Healthy youth ministries don’t assume alignment—they build it intentionally.

Then take intentional action to reach students who don’t naturally get attention.

A Practical System to Eliminate Favoritism

Strong discipleship systems require structure, not just good intentions.

Here’s a simple exercise that can bring clarity fast:

Create a board or chart. List every student in your ministry down one side. Across the top, list every adult leader. Ask each adult—including yourself—to place a mark next to the students they have a meaningful relationship with.

When you’re finished, step back and look at the chart.

You’ll immediately see which students aren’t connected to an adult. Those students aren’t a problem—they’re a responsibility. Someone needs to step in and intentionally build a relationship with them.

This kind of intentional relational mapping strengthens volunteer collaboration, clarifies leadership roles, and protects the discipleship environment from accidental neglect.

Formation Outcome: Every Student Known and Valued

When every student is known by at least one caring adult, favoritism loses its power.

Students experience belonging.
Leaders gain clarity.
Volunteers share ownership.
The ministry becomes healthier and more sustainable.

And youth ministry becomes what it was always meant to be—a place where every student is seen, valued, and loved.

Healthy youth ministry curriculum and structure aren’t just about what we teach—they’re about how we build environments where every student can grow.

That’s the kind of culture that forms disciples who stay.
