Sue, The Non-Leader

youth worker, youth ministry, nonleader

I am getting into Glee and I love the crazy cheerleading coach, Sue Sylvester. Sue is everything a leader should not be. She leads by position, caring only about herself. When the team wins, she thinks she is the only winner. She treats her teammates like slaves and she works hard to build herself up and tear others down. If someone like Will Schuester, the coach of the glee club, tries to build students up she immediately works to tear him and the students down. Some of Sue’s best lines are:

•    “Will, I am not going to do this. Even your breath stinks of mediocrity.”
•    “No one quits the Cheerios. You either die or I kick you off.”

We all laugh at Sue because there is a bit of truth in her character. We all know someone like Sue, a leader who uses fear and position to wage war against followers.  But mostly they do it to cover up insecurities. Do any of us act like Sue in the church? If we do, we might be in leadership but we are not leading…and that’s how I see it.
