A 4-session leadership retreat designed for students who feel God may be calling them into ministry.
Called: Following God’s Call to Ministry is a student leadership retreat designed for students who feel God may be calling them into ministry. Receiving a divine appointment can be confusing and overwhelming.
Is this something I can do? Is this truly what God wants? Where do I even start?
Moses, Gideon, and Jeremiah all struggled to embrace God’s call, and they were audibly told what to do. This retreat will help students navigate a few of the first steps in following God’s call.
THEME VERSE
“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here I am! Send me.’” – Isaiah 6:8 (ESV)
FOUR SESSIONS
EVERYTHING YOU NEED IS INCLUDED IN YOUR DOWNLOAD
Each Called session uses biblical teaching, Bible study, discussion questions, ministry development tools and assessments, and specific life application questions to help students grow confident in their calling.
Over the course of these four sessions, students will explore what it means to be called to ministry. They’ll learn how to identify their calling, examine the role of sacrifice and faith in serving God, and begin developing the skills and mindset needed to be a godly leader.
SESSION 1: God Called and Sent (Acts 13:1–4)
This lesson shows us that a call to ministry is a call from God. Qualifications for ministry aren’t based on a person’s skills and gifts but on the One who calls them. God rarely, if ever, calls us to something easy or comfortable. Obedience to God often requires sacrifice to self, so we need a support system to encourage us to keep going when circumstances become challenging.

SESSION 2: All In (1 Kings 19:19–21)
A call to ministry is a call to serve. Your work ethic matters. There are always needs to be met, but time is limited. Work hard and make the most of the opportunities you have. “Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few’” (Matt. 9:37). Most ministry work is not glamorous or on the stage, but it is necessary work that must be done. Answering a call to ministry is answering a call to sacrifice and service. It is a call that requires complete commitment.

SESSION 3: Wait for the Lord (Matthew 14:22–33)
God calls us to do God-sized tasks, meaning assignments that are beyond us, work we cannot accomplish by our own abilities. Because these callings will be beyond our control, they will feel risky, as anything beyond our control does. Those around us will recognize our efforts as risky and step back, unwilling to engage with us in the calling God has given, leaving us to step out in faith on our own. Faith is the key. Do we trust God beyond what we can see, what we can do, and even what makes sense to us? If we do, God may just carry us to places we could never have reached on our own.

SESSION 4: Godly Training (1 Timothy 4:6–16)
Like anything else, we will improve in our roles in ministry as we gain more training and experience. Faith and obedience are probably the most important traits a ministry leader needs, and even those can be strengthened through spiritual training and experience. But there is also a pragmatic aspect to leading God’s people that develops and sharpens over time. It is important to go through evaluations, understand your strengths and weaknesses, work on new skills, and learn from those around you and from those further down the road in ministry. Be a ministry leader who is always strategically looking for ways to improve what you are doing.
